It’s always fun to be a part of smaller celebrations. I love all weddings, but when you’re asked to be a part of a low-key reception, it’s always a lot of fun! Malcolm and Abby were married in Brooklyn in March and then held a Michigan reception for family and friends, making for a Ypsilanti Freighthouse wedding. Ypsilanti is the city they met and fell in love (see the photos in front of Stick’s where they met!), so it felt fitting to hold a special reception at the Ypsilanti Freighthouse.
We had only spoken on the phone prior to the wedding, as these two now live in California, but I was warmly welcomed by everyone. It happened to be one of the hottest days of the year and we were all in an un-airconditioned old railroad depot, but it was still a ton of fun!
This Ypsilanti Freighthouse wedding started with a short ceremony. Despite being already married, Abby and Malcolm wanted to share a little bit of their ceremony and vows with those present in Michigan. There were so many personal touches, including a friend musician, Abby’s brother officiating, a special poem, and personally written vows. It added to the emotion of the day (even though they were already married!).
A memorable part of this happened to be something I’m super glad we can laugh over. We took a bunch of family formal photos and portraits of Abby and Malcolm before the ceremony and reception got started. We went right across the street to a park and I set everyone up. Just after the first set of formals, we noticed a smell. Well, it happened to be DOG POOP. Abby unfortunately had stepped in it and had gotten some in her dress train. Instead of freaking out, she laughed it off and had her mom cut the bottom tulle off her train, and I cleaned off her shoe so we could have a dog poop free rest of our day. I had never thought to double check a grassy spot for dog poop but now I do so. Thankfully Abby was a chill AF bride who just rolled with the day. My type of lady.
Ypsilanti and Depot Town is actually one of my favorite little spots for photos, so if you’re thinking about engagement photos and like that side of town, please take me! I just love the colors and architecture more than Ann Arbor. Plus there is Sidetracks and Cultivate, two of my fav spots.
And if you’re getting married and want loft vibes with the ability to cater in Aubree’s pizza which is literally right next door, please check out the Ypsilanti Freighthouse. I loved shooting there and would love to go back one day! Take me please!
