Ava and Joe’s Detroit Yacht Club wedding took place on a warm, humid June day, the skies taunting us with darkness. But despite a little bit of drizzle, we had the most perfect sunset to cap off what was a beautiful day full of love and a strong commitment to each other.

When we talked about their day, Ava made note that the architecture and historical beauty of the venues they chose were important to them. I appreciated them as well – I truly love the richness of a historic venue and tried to include as much as I could as part of the photography of this Detroit Yacht Club wedding.

We began with Ava getting ready right at the Detroit Yacht Club in the Trophy Room. When I arrived they were just finishing up hair and makeup, which was perfect timing! I started with some accessory photos – Ava had so many beautiful items to include – and then got to work getting Ava ready so we could do a first look with her bridesmaids and then her dad.

If you can believe it, the bride herself made these bouquets, and they turned out incredible! She also saved me a few flowers for my flat lays which was great.

After a few photos, we headed to Saints Peter and Paul Jesuit Church in downtown Detroit for the ceremony. This is a stunningly beautiful church right across from the Ren Cen. It was there that Ava and Joe first saw each other on their wedding day.

After the formalities, we took photos at the church and back at the Detroit Yacht Club, the rain holding off! I was prepared for anything and the Detroit Yacht Club has many stunning locations inside and out, which is why it’s a great option for weddings!

Ava and Joe clearly spent a lot of time making so many personal items for their Detroit Yacht Club wedding. You could see it in much of the reception decor – their dog stirrers for the bar, personalized table numbers, a memorial table and more.

Probably the most beautiful part of the day? The fact that we got an incredible golden hour for photos on the docks at the Detroit Yacht Club. Many times when a day is cloudy and a tad rainy, the best sunsets happen and I’m so glad Ava and Joe got one! Their engagement session was also cloudy so this was a cherry on top of a beautiful day.
