Spring Royal Oak Farmer’s Market Wedding

Kristen and Mason’s spring Royal Oak Farmer’s Market wedding was such a fun day to be a part of! I’ve known Kristen since she was small – I went to school with her older brother and we all attended the same church growing up. Needless to say, it was an honor to be chosen to photograph her wedding!

These two met at work in June 2015 and spent the summer getting to know each other. Kristen described the beginnings of their relationship as very Jim and Pam à la The Office, getting to know each other during coffee breaks, lunches, hanging out after work for drinks and eventually dinner. They spent a lot of time having dates in Detroit as it was a good meeting spot when they lived in separate parts of the metro. They have a sweet pup named Artie who made an appearance in their engagement session.

What I loved most about this spring Royal Oak Farmer’s Market wedding was the lack of a wedding party. Hear me out – I don’t hate wedding parties. They’re fine and if you want one, great! But what Kristen and Mason did was invited their friends on a big bus to have some drinks and take a few photos. We were casual about it and it was just really fun and light-hearted. They still got the wedding party experience without the stress of buying the same dress or getting your hair done the same way, etc.

After a first look nearby to the getting ready hotel, we took a few family photos and then headed off on a big bus to downtown Detroit. We used the Cass Ave Viaduct with its beautiful teal color backdrop for photos, as well as the Detroit Public Library. We had a beautiful spring day – couldn’t have asked for better! The trees were blooming and the sun was shining – literally perfect.

The Royal Oak Farmer’s Market is a big space which gives plenty of room for dancing, mingling, and fun. One of the great parts about having a spring Royal Oak Farmer’s Market wedding is choosing the catering. Kristen and Mason chose Imperial Tacos and Woodpile BBQ which was so much fun! I love a non-traditional wedding food – just makes it more personal and interesting.
