Fall Coriander Kitchen Wedding

Kuma and Brittany’s fall Coriander Kitchen wedding was the perfect warm early fall day on the water. Coriander Kitchen is one of the coolest venues I’ve ever worked at. Coriander is a woman-owned restaurant and bar located inside a former marina situated in Detroit’s canal district, a hidden gem on the city’s far-east side. I had never been to Coriander until Brittany and Kuma reached out to me about their wedding.

Everything about this fall Coriander Kitchen wedding was unique and personal. Brittany and Kuma were so thoughtful and intentional with every part of their wedding day which made it a joy to be a part of.

The day began with getting ready at the Cambria Hotel in Detroit – it’s new and beautiful inside! Kuma nodded to his heritage with a brightly colored printed sash and an Africa shaped necklace. The same print was found on Brittany’s headband and nails – loved this detail!

After a first look at the Detroit Institute of Arts, we were off to Coriander for the ceremony and reception. This fall Coriander Kitchen wedding had a ceremony right on the water. But before we could begin, the couple did a first look with their families, who were the only people present for the ceremony and dinner. I had never seen this before but the pure joy on everyone’s faces when they turned around to see Brittany and Kuma was so lovely.

I’m pretty sure this ceremony was one of the best I’ve witnessed. Everything was done with intention. Kuma’s sister officiated and the couple shared beautiful, personal vows while the sun set over the water. Literally a DREAM. Nothing felt hurried or rushed because it was a very intimate group of people witnessing the event.

After the ceremony, everyone headed into dinner on Coriander’s patio. The meal was spectacular – curated for the event. We saved all of the portraits for post-dinner while the staff flipped the room to prepare for the reception.

Brittany and Kuma’s friends trickled in for a little cocktail hour as we wrapped up portraits. The sun was absolutely to die for at this fall Coriander Kitchen wedding. I don’t think we could have had better weather!

The couple chose to sign their marriage license surrounded by everyone after they entered the reception. But perhaps my favorite intentional moment was having two first dances – with surprise songs they choose for one another. It was so fun to watch the surprise unfold.

I adored being a part of this wedding and had so much fun alongside Brittany and Kuma. They throw a hell of a party!
